Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
On February 24, Kolkata marked the 152nd anniversary of its iconic tram service with a special heritage ride on tram no. 498, a wooden tram built during World War II. The decorated tram departed from Gariahat Depot at 9 AM, covering key tram routes, including Esplanade and Shyambazar. Several children and tram enthusiasts boarded the tram from Esplanade to participate in the celebrations. According to the Calcutta Tram Users Association, the event was organized by renting the tram from the government.
The main event took place at Shyambazar Tram Depot, where cultural programs were held to commemorate the milestone. Enthusiasts and attendees shared their experiences of Kolkata’s historic tramways, which remain the oldest electric tram network in Asia. Discussions focused on the significance of trams in the city’s heritage and transport system. The decorated tram, carrying participants, later retraced its route, returning to Gariahat via Esplanade.
Kolkata’s trams have played a crucial role in the city’s public transport system since their introduction in 1873. The city remains the only one in India to operate a functioning tram network. Over the years, tram routes have been reduced due to modernization and infrastructure changes. The event aimed to highlight the tram's legacy and continued relevance as an eco-friendly transport system while celebrating its long-standing presence in the city.
